SOCIAL MEDIA APP ‘SLASHER’ BUILDS HORROR COMMUNITY
By Paul Joyce
“This definitely isn’t Facebook,” I thought, as I signed onto SLASHER for the very first time. As I sifted through friend requests from profiles like Deathsdream and Docrotten, I smiled. “These are my people!”
SLASHER is the creation of Damon Della Greca, a horror movie addict and convention goer. Damon said he created the social media app when he began having difficulty connecting with like-minded movie buffs.
“The first thing you notice is the timeline, which is similar to your mainstream social networks like Facebook or Instagram,” said Della Greca, regarding the Slasher app. “People are posting their thoughts about movies, sharing photos, sharing information, talking about stuff that they’ve made or that they are looking to sell. There’s an events calendar with tons of conventions, film festivals, gaming nights,” he said. “There’s even a dating section for people who are looking for like-minded love.”
Another element that first-time users will notice is a lack of censorship. With gore and violence being staples of the genre, users are free to post graphic images without the dreaded policing associated with other social media apps.
“This audience is so passionate,” he said, noting that many people share his enthusiasm for all things horror related. “It helps me deal with anxiety and it’s always been a terrific escape. These kinds of stories are just fantastic for the imagination and they provide what people need at times.”
While Della Greca isn’t releasing exact figures about his community, it’s evident that his platform has already succeeded in uniting people with common interests. More of a labor of love than a revenue source at the moment, the creator defines his goals with conviction. “I want to bring the horror community closer together so that people can find one another far more easily. The other thing is providing a springboard for the independent creators out there that just need a chance to be in front of people, to be seen and given a shot.”
